Social History — 1953
Matchbook, souvenir matchbook
Bryant and May Ltd produced this souvenir box of matches for Odeon theatres. They commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and were issued free to filmgoers in Odeon cinemas at the time of the event in 1953.
In the days following the coronation, Odeon cinemas screened two full-length colour films. 'Elizabeth Is Queen' and 'Queen is Crowned' attracted large crowds. Few households had televisions at the time so the cinema enabled people acorss the country to see the historic and spectacular event.
