Hunger marchers rest on their journey from Tyneside to London
Jarrow Hunger Marchers with banners on arrival in London, 31 October 1936. One of 25 photographs by Humphrey Spender showing scenes of working class life in London in the 1930's. Spender was influenced by the idea that many of the social problems in poor urban areas were due to sub-standard housing. He felt that the right architectural principles might solve some of the problems he saw.
