Social History — 1948
Medallion & case
This commemorative bronze medallion was presented, as a souvenir, to participants at the London Summer Olympics of 1948. Made by the London firm John Pinches (Medallists) Limited the medallions were produced in bronze, silver and gilt bronze, each version being stored in a different colour box.
Pinches also manufactured the gold, silver and bronze medals presented at the Games. The obverse of the medallion depicting Quadriga with triumphant winner dashing replicated the design created for the 1908 London Olympic Games participation medal by the Australian sculptor and medallist Bertram Mackennal.
The medal was one of a set of Olympic medals presented to the London Museum in 1948 by the Organising Olympic Commitee at the conclusion of the games.
