Social History — 1954-1960
Record & sleeve
Vinyl 78 rpm record produced by Phillips in a card sleeve, originally purchased from Saville Pianos Ltd of Hoe Street, Walthamstow. The record is ‘Let’s Have Another Party’ by Winifred Atwell, which was released in 1954. It was the first recording by a black artist in Britain to top the charts. Atwell emigrated to Britain from Trinidad in 1946. Classically trained, Atwell earned her living by performing ragtime music in dance halls and clubs. Decca Records gave her a contract after seeing her perform in a charity concert. During the fifties Atwell had her own television series on BBC and ITV and a total of eleven top hits.
