Escalator uplighter
This light fitting with a bronze finish was installed in Chiswick Park underground station in 1931 during a refurbishment in preparation for the western extension of the Piccadilly Line. Designed by Charles Henry Holden, it was one of several uplighters fitted on the balustrades of the new station escalators.
The electrified underground system represented modernity, power and efficiency. Stations were fitted with the latest technology including escalators, lifts, and electric lights.
