Sampler, embroidery sampler
Woollen canvas worked in dark green silk in cross, satin and Algerian eye stitch. Simple geometric border, rows of pattern worked alternately with the alphabet and numerals, a verse, beginning with 'What is life?...', bordered by stylised crowns and patterns. Inscription: "Eliza Lawson, aged 11, Decbr 3d 1822, Aged 11". Three sides hemmed, one side selvedge with blue threads. Condition: some moth holes, staining of fabric.
