A PLAN of the Famous VICTORY at BLEINEM obtained by his Grace the Duke of MARLBOROUGH over the Elector of BAVARIA and the Marechals TALLARD and MARCIN, the 13th August 1704 S.N.
This silk map commemorates the Battle of Blenheim of 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The French were defeated in Bavaria by a combined military force of British, Dutch and Austrian troops under the joint command of the Duke of Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy.
The map of the battlefield was etched by Jan van Vianen and printed on silk by Renier Leers for the English market. It features a portrait of the Duke of Marlborough in the top left hand corner and a dedication to Queen Anne in the top right. The full title - 'A PLAN of the Famous VICTORY at BLEINEM obtained by his Grace the Duke of MARLBOROUGH over the Elector of BAVARIA and the Marechals TALLARD and MARCIN, the 13th August 1704 S.N.' - refers to Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, whose forces were met by Eugene of Savoy's troops at Lützingen. Tallard and Marsin were the French commanders. Tallard's contingent met the Duke of Marlborough's troops at Blenheim on the banks of the River Danube.
