Warrant from Christopher Wren to Thomas Gilbert
The rebuilding of St Paul’s Cathedral was the largest single undertaking of Restoration London. A tax on coal imported into the Port of London helped pay for the project. Work began in 1670. Over 50,000 tonnes of stone, quarried at Portland, Dorset, was shipped to London.
This document relates to the purchase of Portland Stone for rebuilding St Paul's Cathedral. Dated 11 October 1700, it is a warrant from Christopher Wren to Thomas Gilbert to raise 2,000 tons of Portland stone from His Majesty's Quarries for delivery to Portsmouth Dock. It is signed by Christopher Wren.
