Social History — 1948
Medal & case, prize medal
The gold, silver and bronze medals presented at the Summer London Olympics for 1948 had the same design used since the 1928 Amsterdam Games created by the Italian artist Giuseppe Cassioli (ITA -1865-1942). For 1948, the medals also included the inscription 'XVIII OLYMPIAD LONDON 1948.' The same design was used until the reverse was re-designed for the Summer Olympic Games held in Munich in 1972.
The medal is from a set of surplus medals donated to the London Museum by the Olympic organising committee after the conclusion of the games with the explanation: ‘they are not souvenirs which we wish to fall into the hands of people who can lay no claim to them.’
