Printed Ephemera — 1918
Official Programme of tthe Procession, The "Wilson Smile" for London
Souvenir programme published to commemorate the visit of the American President Woodrow Wilson to the Guildhall on Saturday 28th December 1918. The programme entitled 'The Wilson Smile for London' is printed with details of the processional route taken by the President and the King and Queen through the City to the Guildhall. The programme includes a grainy photographic portrait of the president probably reproduced from a newspaper. On the front cover are printed sepia medallion portraits of King George V and Queen Mary surrounded by a cholour chromolithographed red blue & white flag and crest border decoration. This identical cover was used by the printer for several similar programmes commemorating over events during the riegn of King George V. Similarly to all popular events that attracted a mass crowd small printers such as the East London Printing Company were quick to take advantange of the public mood of celebration and produce cheap souvenirs such as these programmes that were sold for one penny (1d) by programme sellers walking amongst the crowds.
