Printed Ephemera — 1806
Account of the funeral of Lord Nelson
This four page souvenir pamphlet entitled 'This correct account of the processions and ceremonies of the funeral of Lord Nelson with engraved representation of the coffin, funeral car and arrangements in Greenwich Hospital and St Paul's' was extracted from Bell's Weekly Messenger of Sunday 12 January 1806. It has a number of engravings including the lay-out of the lying in state at Greenwich and the funeral at St Paul's Cathedral, the funeral carriage as well as the decoration on the sides of the coffin. There are four pages that carry a detailed description of the event from the procession by water and on land to St Paul's Cathedral and then the funeral itself.
The text describes the enormous size of the crowd that assembled to watch the body pass through the streets of the city. When the 'great western gate' of the cathedral was opened 'the winds that were thereby admitted gently waved the flags of the French and Spanish ensigns captured at Trafalgar, compelling them to a reluctant tribute to the memory of their immortal captor'.
