Printed Ephemera — 1920
Souvenir of the Official Programme of the Unveiling of the Cenotaph
Souvenir programme commemorating the unveiling of the Cenotaph in Whitehall by King George V, on Armistice Day, November 11th 1920. The programme is printed with details of the day's event that also included the procession of the body of the 'unknown warrior' through London's streets to Westminster Abbey Such cheaply produced programmes were mass printed for sale at all large public events in London that attracted huge crowds. Sold for one penny they would have been primarily sold as souvenirs and as a guide to the day's events to spectactors lining the route by street traders moving amongst the crowds. The printer S Burgess was one of London's most prolific producers of penny street souvenir programmes during this period and also published a penny souvenir paper napkin commemorating this event.
