Social History — 1951
Box
This cardboard box, covered in purple paper, was the original packaging for a bar of soap issued to commemorate the Festival of Britain. The lid is printed in gold with the Festival of Britain star logo. The circular bar of souvenir soap contained within was manufactured by Richard Wheen & Sons Ltd., of Deptford. On one side of the soap bar is moulded an image of the Crystal Palace which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851; and on the other, the Festival of Britain star logo. The 1951 Festival was very conscious of its 1851 predecessor and the displays at the South Bank included an ‘1851 centenary pavilion’.
