Votes for Women, A Women's Demonstration at Royal Albert Hall

Printed handbill or flyer announcing a women's demonstration to be held on Thursday 9th December 1909 in the Royal Albert Hall. The meeting was held to welcome Emmmeline Pankhurst back from her lecture tour of America and included speeches from both her and Christabel Pankhurst. The meeting also included a surprise appearance by Mary Leigh who had just been released from Winson Green Prison having been one of the first hunger-striking prisoners to be fed by force. The reverse of the handbill has been annotated with pencilled notes, made during the meeting referring to key messages in the speeches.
The bill is printed in the purple and green colours of the WSPU and includes Sylvia Pankhurst's trumpeting angel logo. At the bottom of the flyer are printed details of ticket prices. The appearance of the Suffragette leaders and Mary Leigh at this meeting ensured the Albert Hall would be full to capacity. Both ticket sales and donations during the meeting raised a total of £2000 that was put towards the funding the WSPU general election campaign of 1910.
