Printed Ephemera — 1908-06-21
Women's Social and Political Union
Printed handbill announcing final details of Women's Sunday that took place on 21st June 1908. The handbill, produced in the last weeks before the event is a final appeal for public support of this, the first 'Votes for Women 'monster meeting and demonstration organised by the Women's Social and Political Union. Mass attendance at this event was vital to the campaign as it would prove to the government that female suffrage was supported by the majority of the public. The mass printing and distribution of a range of flyers and handbills promoting the event was masterminded both from WSPU headquarters at Clement's Inn and by local branches. This marketing tactic proved highly effective and resulted in a crowd of up to 300,000 attending the event. ‘Never’, reported the Daily Chronicle, has so vast a throng gathered in London to witness a parade of political forces’.
