Miss Fanny Kemble as Mrs Beverley in the Gamester
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir portrait plate printed with an engraving of the actress Miss Fanny Kemble in the role of Mrs Beverley in the Gamester. Published March 20th 1830. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Fanny Kemble came from a theatrical family, and made her stage debut as Juliet at the Covent Garden theatre on 26th October, 1929. Kemble acted until 1834 when she retired from the stage to marry an American. During their marriage she spent several months living on his Georgia plantation. Kemble's husband kept slaves and Kemble wrote a journal about the enslaved people's living conditions and treatment. Kemble left her husband and published her journals after the start of the American Civil War. In 1877 Kemble returned to London with her daughter.
