Photography — C. 1973
Photographic print
Photographic print of c. 1973 showing a store called Peter Bottone, located in a Southwark street in a terrace of run down and boarded up shops. The shop advertises Peter Bottone's ice cream, but the window also displays other products including fruit and groceries. A board advertising R. White's soft drinks is propped up outside, and a shop worker stands in the doorway. Bottone's was part of a long tradition of Italian family businesses established by immigrants who came to Britain from the continent from the 1850s. Many Italian families followed in the footsteps of the Swiss-Italian immigrant Carlo Gatti who made a great success of selling ice cream in London after his arrival in the city in 1847.
