The Valiant Sailors
Naval ballad of five verses entitled 'The Valiant Sailors.' illustrated with a woodcut of a sailing ship on rough seas.
This was one of a series of ballads or popular songs published to commemorate British naval victories and the heroism of sailors in the Napoleonic wars against France. Such ballads became particularly popular as many young British men left the UK to fight abroad. Mass printed by small London publishers such as those located in the Seven Dials area of London they were primarily sold by street sellers and travelling pedlars. Illustrated broadsides such as this were often purchased as souvenirs, framed and hung on walls to decorate homes.
