Library — 1833
Library, Lambeth Palace
This watercolour shows the Library at Lambeth Palace. It is the main library for documents relating to the history of the Church of England and has been available since 1610.
Archbishop Howley commisioned the drawings in this album in 1833 after some renovation works had been carried out to improve the condition of the buildings. The artist, Henry William Burgess, was a notable landscape artist and careful draughtsman who became artist to William IV. He was particularly interested in the study of trees, as shown here and was employed by several nobleman to draw and record their estates.
