Henry William Burgess (active 1809-39) was a landscape painter based in London. He came from a family of British artists, and his own son John Bagnold (1829-1897) also became a painter.
He also served as landscape painter to William IV and before that appointment was retained by several nobleman to draw thier estates. The drawings in this album represent such a commission for the Archbishop of Canterbury. This watercolour depicts the entrance to Lambeth Palace which was the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury when he was in London.Howley, Archbishop from 1828 was keen to improve the buildings which comprised the Palace and invited a renowned architect Edward Blore to redesign the Palace. The residential wing was completed in 1833 which may explain why these drawings were commisione in that year.
