Lift panel, The Coliseum theatre lift panels
These decorative panels lined the interior of the lift at the Coliseum theatre. One includes a representation of 'tragedy', the other an image of 'comedy'. Early in the 20th century, Oswald Stoll conceived the idea of a vast variety theatre at Charing Cross. The Coliseum opened in St Martin's Lane in 1904, and was then the largest theatre in London. It was the first London theatre to have a revolving stage, which allowed three or more sets to be used at the same time. It was also the only theatre in Europe with electric lifts.
