His Majesty's Royal Licence to Reside within the Kingdom
This licence granting foreign aliens the right to live in England was probably issued during the reign of George III. The holder is granted 'His Majesty's Royal Licence to reside within the Kingdom', provided that he 'shall not reside within Ten miles of the Sea coast or near any of his Majesty's Dock Yards. And on Condition that he shall communicate every change of Residence to the Alien Office'. The Alien Office had a Westminster address. The penalty for disobeying was loss of the licence, plus six months' imprisonment.
