Votes for Women. Women's Freedom League. Miss Cicely Hamilton
Postcard with photographic portrait of Cicely Hamilton. Above is printed 'Votes for Women. Women's Freedom League' and below 'Miss Cicely Hamilton. (Member of the National Executive Committe W.F.L.)', followed by the addresses of the organisation's offices.
Cicely Hamilton (1872-1952) was an actress and dramatist. She subscribed to the Women's Social and Political Union and joined the Women's Freedom League in 1907. She found the WSPU too autocratic and militant, but became secretary of the Chelsea branch of the WFL. In 1908 Hamilton co-founded the Women Writers' Suffrage League. She later joined the executive committee of the Actresses' Franchise League. Hamilton created a number of performances to promote female suffrage, including a 'Waxworks' puppet show, and two plays 'How the Vote Was Won' and 'Pageant of Great Women'. She also wrote books and novels relating to women's issues. In 1909 Hamilton helped to establish the Tax Resistance League.
