Printed Ephemera — 1908
The opening ceremony of a Suffragette fundraising bazaar held in the Portman Rooms, 1908
The opening ceremony of a Suffragette fundraising bazaar held in the Portman Rooms, 1908. In the photograph can be seen the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence with Lady Johnstone and possibly Lady Sybil Smith. Wealthy benefactors were vital to the success of the campaign. Regular fundraising events such as bazaars were hugely successful in raising large sums of money for the campaign 'war chest'.
The Portman Rooms were regularly used by the Women's Social and Political Union. They held weekly meetings known as 'At Homes' there from 1907 until they moved to the larger Queen's Hall in the later summer of 1908.
