Crowds outside Westminster Police Court awaiting the trial of arrested Suffragettes, February 1907
Crowds outside Westminster Police Court awaiting the trial of arrested Suffragettes, February 1907. On 14th February the Women's Social and Political Union held a Women's Parliament at Caxton Hall. During the meeting Christabel Pankhurst urged the audience to march to the House of Commons and demand admission advising them not to be afraid of the police, to link arms, not to break ranks and, if they lost sight of the leaders to become leaders themselves. Up to 400 Suffragettes joined the march to the Palace of Westminster. Those arrested in the ensuing scuffle with the police were sent to Westminster Police Court for sentencing. As can be seen in the photograph the arrival of the Suffragettes at the Police Court drew a considerable crowd to await the news that 56 of the women were sent to prison.
