Suffragettes Mabel Capper and Patricia Woodlock
Suffragettes Mabel Capper (left) and Patricia Woodlock (right) advertising a 'Votes for Women' meeting and demonstration to be held at Heaton Park, Manchester on 19th July 1908. The women wear aprons printed with details of the meeting on a purple, white and green striped background. A crowd of up to 150,000 attended the well-publicised meeting to hear speeches on 13 different platforms. Mabel, just twenty years old when the photograph was taken, lived in Manchester and, according to 'Votes for Women', had taken part in by-elections and had several amusing encounters with Cabinet Ministers. By 1913 she had served four terms of imprisonment for Suffragette militancy. Patricia Woodlock (c. 1878- alive 1930) was a member of the Liverpool Independent Labour Party and helped to establish the Liverpool branch of the Women's Social and Political Union. By 1909 she was an organiser in Liverpool. Woodlock was imprisoned on several occasions for taking part in WSPU deputations.
