Postcard with photographic portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst. This is thought to be one of the photographs taken by her companion, Nurse Pine, in Russia in 1917. In 1917 Emmeline Pankhurst was encouraged by Prime Minister Lloyd George to go to Russia to encourage Russian women to support World War I.
At the start of World War I, Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst called a halt to the suffragette activities of the Women's Social and Political Union, the organisation they had founded to campaign for female suffrage. They redirected the WSPU's energies into patriotic support for the government and encouraging women to do war work.
