Social History — 1766-1800
Desk, writing desk, writing slope
The desk was originally given to Fanny Burney (known as Madame d'Arblay after her marriage) by Queen Charlotte when she was lady in waiting, and is mentioned in her diary. The desk passed into the possession of Mrs Chappel, Fanny Burney's niece, from whom it was bought by the late donor's uncle the Rt. Hon. Frederick Levaton Harris P.C. for his collection of Fanny Burney relics at her old house Camilla Lacey, Burford Bridge.
