Nurse Pine's Nursing Home, 9 Pembridge Gardens, Notting Hill. The image depicts the nursing home run by Nurse Pine where many released hunger-striking Suffragette prisoners, including Emmeline Pankhurst recuperated. A handwritten caption at the bottom of the photo reads 'Mrs Pankhurst arrested on a stretcher, Thursday 7:30 pm 16 July, 1914'. On 11th July Emmeline Pankhurst was released from Holloway prison under the terms of the Cat & Mouse Act. Severely weakened by hunger-strike she went straight to the nursing home to recuperate. Five days later, determined to attend a WSPU meeting at Holland Park Hall on the evening of the 16th she set out on a stretcher accompanied by doctors and clergymen who were to conduct her to the waiting ambulance. Hundreds of people watched as, during a short struggle with the police, she was rearrested and returned to Holloway, her public appearance considered evidence she had recovered sufficiently to continue her three year sentence.
