Printed Ephemera — 1910
Execution of Dr. Crippen. The Naughty Doctor
Execution broadside printed with an account of the crime, trial and execution of Dr.Crippen who was convicted of the murder of his wife at a trial held at the Old Bailey in 1910. The broadside printed partly in verses includes details of the crime, a transcript of Crippen's statement, and a description of his lover Ethel Le Neve. Crippen was hanged at Pentonville Prison on 23rd November 1910.
Although public hangings stopped in 1868 there remained a thriving market for execution and criminal broadsides printed with full details of the most notorious and gruesome crimes. Such broadsides were mass produced and cheaply printed and sold in vast quantities to newshungry Londoners. The spelling and grammar was often poor and the details not always accurate.
