Suffragettes Advertising a Demonstration, July 1908
Suffragettes advertising a demonstration, July 1908. In the cart can be seen the Suffragette leader 'General' Flora Drummond. The reverse of the photo identifies the area as Earls Court. Horse drawn advertising carts decorated with banners and posters were regularly used by Suffragettes to announce meetings and demonstrations. Filled with shouting Suffragettes distributing flyers they quickly attracted a crowd and could travel greater distances than campaigners taking to the streets on foot. This cart was intended to encourage crowds to attend a demonstration organised by the Women's Social and Political Union for July 1908.
