Printed Ephemera — C.1914
Suffragette Bertha Watson
Photograph of American birth control advocate Margaret Sanger. Margaret fled to England in August 1914 using the alias Bertha Watson, in order to avoid prosecution for promoting contraception. The name 'Bertha Watson' is written on the reverse of the image. The grainy quality suggests it is a surveillance image taken by an undercover photographer working for the Home Office.
In exile in England Margaret met a number of British feminists and radicals including the suffragette Kitty Marion. In 1915 Kitty went to live in the USA and worked with Margaret Sanger on the campaign for birth control.
