Suffragette Standing on the Steps of the Public Trustee Office, April 1909
Suffragette standing on the steps of the Public Trustee Office, April 1909. Around her neck is a Votes for Women Japanese silk motoring scarf. One of many fashion accessories produced in the suffragette colours of purple, white and green, the scarf sold for 2s 11d and could be purchased via mail order or in shops run by the Women's Social and Political Union. It was first advertised in the Votes for Women newspaper in June 1908 with the marketing slogan 'the beauty of the scarf is not its only merit for it washes, the colours, like the principles of the Union, being fast'.
