Suffragette 'Welcome Procession', April 1909
Suffragette 'welcome procession', April 1909. This event was organised to celebrate the release from Holloway prison of the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. The welcome procession travelled from Holloway to Central London and a reception at the Aldwych Theatre. The banner in the background marked 'Nottingham' indicates that this procession did not just involve London branches of the Women's Social and Political Union but was a national event with Suffragettes arriving from all over the country to take part. Similar welcome processions and breakfast receptions were regularly organised for released Suffragette prisoners. Requiring considerable organisation and funding they were co-ordinated by paid 'organisers' working at WSPU headquarters in Central London and throughout the country.
