Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Suffragette Violet Tillard
Photograph of Violet Tillard (1874-1922), Handwritten on the back is 'Tillard. Violet Tillard. Holloway prisoner, Women's Freedom League.'
Violet Tillard trained as a nurse. By 1908 she was a member of suffragette group the Women’s Freedom League. She was imprisoned for a month for chaining herself, with Muriel Matters and Helen Fox, to the grille in the House of Commons behind which women spectators had to sit. This action gained considerable publicity for the cause, as the grille had to be removed before the women could be unchained from it.
During World War I Tillard was imprisoned again for her membership of the pacifist No-Conscription League. She died in Russia while working to help orphans who were victims of poverty and starvation brought about by the war and the Revolution.
