Suffragette Caroline Townsend
Studio portrait photograph of Caroline Townsend (1870-1941). Below is stamped 'R.J. Wood Brockley S.E.'. Handwritten on the back is 'Caroline Townsend Feb 24th 1909 to March 24th Holloway Prison'.
Caroline Townsend was joint honorary secretary of the Lewisham branch of the Women's Social and Political Union. She was sentenced to a month in Holloway prison for participating in a deputation to the House of Commons on 24th February 1909. Townsend was also a member of the Church League for Women's Suffrage. Her sister, Hannah, was also a suffragette, and they lived together with another sister, Alice.
