Printed Ephemera — 1907-1914
Suffragette Janet Stutchbury
Photograph of Janet Stutchbury. Handwritten on the back is 'Miss Janet Adams (Adams crossed through) Stuchbury. A great friend of Mrs. Despard and Doctor Knight. She and her sister used to go from door to door selling 'The Vote'. Later she turned her own house into an aftercare for Elderly Deaf & dumb. First at No 52. Clyde Road, then at No. 2?, both in Clyde Rd. Croydon, Surrey'.
The annotation on the reverse suggests Janet Stuchbury and her sister were members of the Women's Freedom League, who published the weekly newspaper 'The Vote'. Charlotte Despard was Honorary Secretary and President of the WFL.
Dr. Elizabeth Knight was a medical doctor and by 1913 was honorary treasurer of the WFL. She was imprisoned on several occasions for her suffragette activities and in 1908 wrote 'Social and Sanitary Conditions of Prison Life'.
