The First Window-Smashers at Bow Street Magistrates Court
The first window-smashers, Mary Leigh (left) and Edith New (right) in the dock at Bow Street Magistrates Court, 1 July 1908. Angered by the way fellow members of the WSPU were being treated by police during a demonstration in Parliament Square on 30 June, Leigh and New broke windows in the Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street. Sentenced to a term of imprisonment Leigh and New joined 27 fellow suffragettes in Holloway arrested during the demonstration.
