Printed Ephemera — 1906
Christabel Pankhurst
Photograph of Christabel Pankhurst pointing. Her gesture symbolically conveys the idea that she is seeing something in the distance, or indicating the direction in which to go. Handwritten in the bottom corner is '1906'.
Christabel Pankhurst was Organizing Secretary of the Women's Social and Political Union, the suffrage organisation founded in 1903 by her mother Emmeline Pankhurst. Christabel’s talent for public speaking gained them many supporters. She was imprisoned several times for her suffragette activities.
1906 was a key year for the WSPU, which in September moved from its Manchester home to new London headquarters at Clements Inn. The organisation began to attract increased publicity, support and funding.
This photograph was taken by Lizzie Caswall Smith, who specialised in portraits of theatrical and society subjects.
