Printed Ephemera — 1914
The Suffragette Prisoner Mary Lindsay
Surveillance image of the Suffragette prisoner Mary Lindsay exercising in the yard at Holloway prison. This shot was taken by an undercover police photographer. Handwritten on the back is ‘Mary Lindsay’.
It is likely this image was taken whilst Mary Lindsay was serving a term of 14 days imprisonment in Holloway for assaulting Lord Weardale with a dog whip. The peer was on his way to Euston Station at the time. Lindsay said in court that she had mistaken him for the Asquith, the Prime Minister.
Scotland Yard commissioned the covert photography of militant suffragettes from 1913. The images were used to identify suffragettes attempting to enter public buildings such as museums and art galleries, where they might attempt to damage the objects.
