No Taxation Without Representation, Mrs Poyser Again
Pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard depicting 'Mrs Poyser' before the Houses of Parliament, holding a banner marked 'No Taxation Without Representation.' The postcard includes one of the most famous lines spoken by Mrs Poyser in George Eliot's novel Adam Bede. The postcard refers to the suffrage argument that women denied the vote and therefore representation in parliament should not have to pay taxes on their income.
Formed in 1907, the Artists' Suffrage League produced posters, postcards and other visual material to promote the Votes for Women message of the non-militant National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. The Chairman of the Artists' suffrage League was Mary Lowndes who also designed many of the banners used by the NUWSS in processions and demonstrations.
