Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Postcard, photographic postcard
Postcard with photograph of a group of suffragettes in a horse-drawn cart during the Cleveland by-election campaign. The Women's Social and Political Union committee rooms at 27 Station Road, Redcar can be seen in the background. There is a banner with 'National Women's Social and Political Union' and the address of the London headquarters. On polling day in July 1909, the sitting Liberal MP Herbert Samuel saw his majority slashed by the Conservatives.
Handwritten on the back of the card is '8.20 am. Just off! Do you like this back view? My departing figure! This is a picnic party just starting out at the time of the Cleveland by-election. What a gorgeous day! & it seems calm! Ever Yours D.' At the side of this message is 'Hope you are not too bored. No rain last night.' The card is addressed to a Mr. Hosegood of 7 Clifton Park, Bristol.
