Printed Ephemera — C. 1918
Postcard, photographic postcard
Postcard with photograph of women carrying placards. They say 'The National Federation of Women Teachers London Unit', ‘A discontented Teacher is a Social danger - Fisher' and 'We claim our share of the Fisher Grant'. Handwritten in ink at the top right is 'E.E. Froud', indicating the woman in the middle of the back row.
Ethel Froud (1880-1941) became honorary secretary of the National Federation of Women Teachers in 1913 and helped to managed its secession from the National Union of Teachers. She then established the National Union of Women Teachers as a union in its own right. Froud was also a member of militant suffragette organisation the Women's Social and Political Union.
Fisher's Education Act of 1918 transferred 60% of the cost of education from local authorities to central government, mainly to increase the provision of secondary education.
