Printed Ephemera — 1913
How the British Government provide Funds for the Suffragettes. Mrs. Pankhurst's Licence.
Commercially produced picture postcard satirising Suffragette militancy. The postcard is printed with a copy of Emmeline Pankhurst's Prisoner's Temporary Discharge Licence issued on 24th July 1913 and includes the caption 'How the British Government provides Funds for the Suffragettes. Mrs Pankhurst's Licence, Original sold for £100.' The postcard ironically refers to the auction of the licence at a meeting held at the London Pavilion on 28th July 1913. The licence was purchased for £100 by an American supporter present at the meeting at which a frail and emaciated Emmeline Pankhurst, severely weakened by hunger strike made a dramatic appearance.
