Printed Ephemera — 1908-1914
'Fifi' The Militant
Commercially produced comic picture postcard satirising the Votes for Women campaign. Here the militant Suffragette 'Fifi' is typically represented as a cat wearing a Votes for Women sash and carrying a hammer used for smashing windows. Standing on a stool she delivers a speech to an audience of dolls and bears. The representation of the Suffragette as a cat was adopted by a number of commercial picture postcard publishers.
The postcard includes a handwritten message from Sonny to Auntie, (Minnie Turner) and a postmark of June 1917. It is most likely however that the postcard was produced before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The recipient Minnie Turner was a member of the Tax Resistance League. She ran her home at Sea View, Victoria Road, Brighton as a boarding house specifically aimed at Suffragettes. Advertising in suffrage newspapers such as Votes for Women she urged ‘Suffragettes spend your holidays in Brighton, central. Terms moderate.’
