Printed Ephemera — 1909-1913
No Vote - No Tax
Pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard entitled 'No Vote - No Tax.' Published by the Suffrage Atelier the postcard refers to the tax resistance policy adopted by many suffrage supporters who resented paying taxes to a government over which they had no influence. The illustration depicts a female tax payer placing money she should have been paying in tax into a collecting box held by a Suffrage campaigner.
The Suffrage Atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'
The Atelier artists specialised in hand-made wooden block prints, stencilling and etchings and produced visually powerful posters and postcards to publicise the pro-suffrage campaign.
