Printed Ephemera — 1909-1912
No Vote, No Tax
Form issued issued as a postcard by the Women's Tax Resistance League to inform members and supporters of forthcoming sales of goods seized in lieu of payment of tax. The form includes space for including, by hand, details of the name of the member whose goods were seized for tax resistance with the date of the auction and address of the sale room. Also printed on the postcard is the logo and address of the league.
The Tax Resistance League (TRL) was formed in 1909 to conduct a campaign of organised resistance to taxation. The argument of the League was that, if women were liable to pay tax, they should be given the right to vote in parliamentary elections and influence how those taxes were spent. The League attracted primarily middle- class professional women, such as Doctors who were liable to income tax and rates. By 1910 it had 104 members. Those who refused to pay tax were liable to the seizure of goods equivalent to the value of taxes owed. When these goods were sold at public auction members of the TRL would, as noted on the postcard, attend the sale and often buy back the seized items for return to their original owners.
