Printed Ephemera — 1908
Postcard, portrait postcard
Postcard with photographic portrait of a woman arranging flowers. Handwritten on the back is 'Miss M. S. Turner (Minnie) Holloway Prison'. There is also a handwritten message: 'To wish you a pleasant Christmas and a Happy New Year, With love from Minnie.' The postcard addressed to Miss J. Turner of Brighton.
Minnie Turner (c.1867-1948) left her position as honorary secretary of the Brighton Women's Liberal Association in 1908, when the Liberal government refused to allow female suffrage. She joined the Women's Social and Political Union and took boarders in her house, especially suffragettes. She advertised for customers in various suffragette newspapers and accommodated many of the leading figures of the WSPU, such as Emmeline Pankhurst. Suffragettes stayed with her while on WSPU business and when recuperating from prison. Turner herself was imprisoned for her suffragette activities. She was also a member of the Tax Resistance League.
The photograph was taken by Ada Schofield, a Brighton photographer.
