Lord Bishop of London, Chaplain to the London Rifle Brigade
Postcard with photographic portrait beneath which is printed 'Lord Bishop of London, Chaplain to the London Rifle Brigade'. Arthur Foley Winnington Ingram (1858-1946) was bishop of London. In 1914 he visited suffragettes in prison and stated that none of them had complained about being forcibly fed. He did not witness an attempt at force feeding, and suffragettes accused him of whitewashing his report. They also called for him to undergo force feeding himself at a suffragette meeting. Handwritten on the back of the card is the message '50 Princes Street Derby Dear Miss Cross, I believe I told you size 6 for the Gents slippers. I should have said size 7. I hope I have let you know in time for you to change them, trusting you are all well. Yours very sincerely, E. Jeffery'. It is addressed to 'Miss M. Cross, Bridge Street, Belper' and postmarked Derby 21 June '23.
