Printed Ephemera — 1927
Emmeline Pankhurst
Postcard with reproduction of a portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst. The original portrait is an oil painting made by Georgina Brackenbury in 1927. There is one copy in the Museum's collection, 50.82/1486, and another in the National Portrait Gallery's collection. Brackenbury studied at the Slade and in 1907 joined the Women's Social and Political Union.
Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903 to campaign for female suffrage. She was a charismatic speaker who converted many to her cause. Led by Emmeline and her daughter Christabel, the WSPU adopted increasingly militant tactics, such as heckling politicians and smashing windows. Emmeline Pankhurst served a number of prison sentences for her suffragette activities and went on hunger strike in protest at suffragettes not having the status of political prisoners.
